Compared to the original presentation in a new mounting. In overall good condition and fresh in colour
Despite his serious illness, Paul Klee created numerous works in the last two years of his life. In 1939, his productivity reached a remarkable peak with 1253 registered works. This late work is characterised by large gestures and an emblematic formal language, both of which were also due to the progression of his illness.
Klee was still an attentive observer of his surroundings, however, and so the painting in paste colour on offer is probably based on an observation on the Bernese Aare or on Lake Thun. Trees painted in great reduction stand monumentally at the water's edge, two dogs walk cheekily into the picture on the left; it is a wonderfully anecdotal late work by the artist.
