Condition

On the old chassis, in the original nailing, some early shrinkage cracks, slightly protruding colour fade to the left of the boy's head. Canvas partially restored on the reverse. In overall good condition and fresh in colour

Comments

Giovanni Giacometti's "Narcissus" takes up a theme that has been explored in art from antiquity through Caravaggio (1571-1610) and the Baroque period to the present day. The story of the attractive son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Leiriope became famous through the famous Metamorphoses by the ancient Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso, Ovid for short. Narcissus fell passionately in love with his own reflection in the water and perished due to his inability to look away from himself.

It is not known who modelled for Giacometti's posing nude of a young man with bent arms standing on a rocky outcrop presumably on Lake Cavloccio. It may be his second-born son Diego. In this painting, Giacometti was primarily interested in the depiction of colour and light effects on a sunny summer's day in the Engadine high valley, as well as the effect of the reflections on the surface of the water. With this painting, he created an impressive work of Swiss Impressionism.

Erläuterungen

Giovanni Giacometti griff mit dem Bildmotiv "Narziss" ein Thema auf, das in der Kunst von der Antike über Caravaggio (1571-1610) und den Barock bis in die Gegenwart behandelt wurde. Die Geschichte des attraktiven Sohnes des Flussgottes Kephissos und der Nymphe Leiriope erlangte durch die berühmten Metamorphosen des antiken römischen Dichters Publius Ovidius Naso, kurz Ovid, Bekanntheit. Narziss verliebte sich leidenschaftlich in sein eigenes Spiegelbild im Wasser und ging an der Unfähigkeit, den Blick von sich selbst abzuwenden, zugrunde.

Bei Giacomettis posierendem Jünglingsakt mit angewinkelten Armen, der auf einem Felsvorsprung vermutlich am Cavlocciosee steht, ist nicht überliefert, wer dem Maler Modell stand. Es könnte sich um seinen zweitgeborenen Sohn Diego handeln. Giacometti ging es bei diesem Gemälde vor allem um die Darstellung von Farb- und Lichteffekten an einem sonnigen Sommertag im Engadiner Hochtal und um die Wirkung der Spiegelungen auf der Wasseroberfläche. Mit diesem Gemälde schuf er ein eindrucksvolles Werk des Schweizer Impressionismus.
