On the original chassis. Horizontal trace of the stretcher frame on the reverse in the centre of the image. In very good condition and fresh in colour
From the mid-1960s, in Santa Monica, California, Sam Francis developed a new, consistent compositional form that was already present in his earlier works. In the early phase of these "Edge Paintings", to which the painting on offer here belongs, he began to push the colour to the edge. The centre is dominated by an almost garish white space. For the colours, he used the primary colours blue, red and yellow as well as green. However, the empty white space is not devoid of content, but a place the viewers can fill in for themselves. Francis said that the white space is reserved for the viewers. The artist draws on the psychology of C.G. Jung in order to find deeper answers to personal and artistic questions. The "Mirror Paintings" reveal his intention particularly well. The very harmonious painting on offer here was shown in the famous exhibition at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York in 1967. It remained in the artist's estate and is still owned by his family today.
