    Comments

After completing his art studies in Berkeley, California, in 1950, Sam Francis moved to Paris, where he met Al Held, Joan Mitchell and Jean-Paul Riopelle. The study of Claude Monet's water lily paintings had a profound influence on his future work. From the rather muted palette of grey and white tones, he returned to light and colour. The white ground became dominant and enabled the artist to give more space to colour and expand his formal language. Francis' work was always characterised by the search for new means of expression. He explored the kinetic power of colour and the experience of space. The work on paper offered here was created in his studio in Arcueil using bold brushstrokes and the "dripping technique"; the flow of colour became an integral part of the composition.
