    Comments

When Sam Francis moved to Paris in 1950 after studying art in Berkeley, he immediately sought out the artists working there, such as Al Held, Joan Mitchell and Jean-Paul Riopelle. He also studied Claude Monet and French colourists such as Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse. For the next six years, Francis lived and worked mainly in Paris (in several studios, including one in Rue de Tiphaine) and in the south of France. Early on, he was discussed and promoted by French art critics in Paris, such as Michel Tapié and Georges Duthuit. Duthuit was Henri Matisse's son-in-law, which is probably how Francis came into contact with his family. Whether and how he personally met the master, who died on 3 November 1954, remains unclear. In any case, the work offered here clearly demonstrates that Francis was very close to the Matisse family. On the reverse, the artist wrote "Painted in Mme Matisse's garden". Mrs Matisse probably even immortalised herself on the reverse with "Mme Matisse". It is also inscribed "PM", an abbreviation that Sam Francis used for "Private Museum", i.e. works that were important to him personally. At the beginning of the 1950s, he created seemingly monochrome works, which later, like the present work, were also constructed in multi-coloured layers. These works are known as "Cells" and "Clouds" or "Atmospheric Landscapes". The present work is a wonderfully dense composition in extremely harmonious colours, with the dominant blue, as Francis himself wrote in the title.
