In this small-format depiction of a wedding, painted in spherical colours, Marc Chagall artistically processes this important event in the lives of married couples that is to be celebrated. The bride and groom under the red chuppah (canopy) stand in the centre, hovering above the houses of Vitebsk. They are surrounded by an angel and a bird, only indicated by a few strokes, and gently held by a bright bouquet of flowers. The flowers symbolise inspiration. The artist was constantly aware of his origins. The small painting thus also forges a link to Jewish traditions, which Chagall repeatedly wove thematically into his works.
