    Comments

At the beginning of January 1960, Sam Francis travelled to Europe again to look for a flat in Paris for himself, his newlywed wife Teruko Yokoi and their daughter Kayo. He still had the studio he had moved into in 1956 in Arceuil, a suburb in the south of the city. In the spring, between various short stays in Bern, he worked on paintings there.

Various archive photos show him working on the series of "Blue Balls Paintings" in the Arceuil studio. The studio floor was covered with sketches on paper showing various compositions of floating, spherical shapes, while the walls were lined with canvases in various stages of completion. As if driven by centrifugal force, the forms seem to be pushed outwards to the edge of the canvas. Debra Burchett-Lere sees in these works a "spiritual, obsessive aspect that encourages the viewer to shift the picture plane into another work" (Burchett-Lere/Zebala, p. 55). The present painting, created in the summer of 1960, is dedicated to "Ebi", i.e. Eberhard W. Kornfeld, and bears witness to the close bond and friendship between the two. The wash, the fine, almost watercolour-like application of oil paint in the centre of the composition, is particularly striking. The artist thus achieves a greater density and a mystical connection between the individual colour clusters.

    Zustand
