In 1934, on the occasion of his first visit to Rome, Giacomo Manzù saw Pope Pius XI sitting in St Peter's Basilica, flanked by two cardinals. This unique, timeless image was to inspire his work from then on. From the late 1930s to the late 1950s, the sculptor created more than fifty cardinals - standing and seated, tall and short, in bronze, alabaster and marble. In this long series, Manzù increasingly set the cardinal figure in rigid, compact forms reminiscent of funerary pyramids or columns. The figure on offer is a variant of a total of three examples

1934, anlässlich seines ersten Besuches in Rom sah Giacomo Manzù Papst Pius XI. im Petersdom sitzend, flankiert von zwei Kardinälen. Dieses einzigartige, zeitlose Bild sollte fortan Inspiration seines Schaffens sein. Von den späten 1930er bis zu den späten 1950er Jahren schuf der Bildhauer mehr als fünfzig Kardinäle - stehende und sitzende, grosse und kleine, in Bronze, Alabaster und Marmor. In dieser langen Serie setzte Manzù die Kardinalsfigur zunehmend in starre, kompakte Formen, die an Grabpyramiden oder Säulen erinnern. Bei der angebotenen Figur handelt es sich um eine Variante von insgesamt drei Exemplaren
