    Comments

One of the few surviving figure studies by Piranesi. It is drawn on the reverse of a sheet printed in Rome in 1773 and therefore very probably dates from that year. A similar composition to the figure on the left can be traced on a sheet with two men in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York (Accession Number: 1972.118.269), and a figure in a similar pose to the second person can be found in the Yaremisha collection in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
