Inspired by the painting David and Bathsheba by Lucas Cranach the Elder (today in the Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, inventory no. 567 B), Picasso began a lithographic realisation of the Old Testament subject on a zinc plate on 30 March 1947. For various reasons, including the fact that the plate was difficult to work on, Picasso interrupted his work and put the plate aside. A year later, on 30 March 1948, Picasso asked Mourlot to transfer the sixth state of the zinc plate onto a stone plate. Both plates were subsequently in his Paris studio, Rue des Grand-Augustins. The print presented here is the sixth state of the zinc plate worked on the litho stone. A total of eleven states are known. - One of the rare artist's copies
