The canvas was removed from the stretcher as well as trimmed at the upper and lower edges of the picture.
The work is a version of the painting "Sternennacht über dem Walensee" (Starry Night over Lake Walen) from 1931 (property of the Swiss Confederation, Federal Office of Culture, Bern, on permanent loan to the Kunstmuseum Basel). It shows on the left a railway composition reflected in Lake Walen, in the centre lights of houses and in the background above the mountain range the starry sky. The pink colour mystically covers the night landscape like a mist.

Die Leinwand wurde vom Keilrahmen abgenommen wie auch am oberen und unteren Bildrand beschnitten
Das Werk ist eine in den Details reduzierte Version zum Gemälde "Sternennacht über dem Walensee" von 1931 (Eigentum der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft, Bundesamt für Kultur, Bern, als Dauerleihgabe im Kunstmuseum Basel). Es zeigt links eine Eisenbahnkomposition, welche sich im Walensee widerspiegelt, in der Mitte Lichter von Häusern und im Hintergrund über der Bergkette den Sternenhimmel. Die rosarote Farbe legt sich wie ein Nebel mystisch über die Nachtlandschaft
