Ursel Berger counts the present small sculpture among the so-called Vollard editions. At the suggestion of Ambroise Vollard, Aristide Maillol created a series of figures after 1900, which he sold to his dealer with all rights. Vollard subsequently issued unlimited editions of the figures. This seems to be one of the earliest figurines offered by Vollard. The known versions still differ in the cast technique - ours is considerably heavier, as it is not hollowed out on the inside, and was therefore probably not yet cast by Florentin Godard, who had taken over the exclusive execution of the Maillol-Vollard bronzes from 1907 or 1909 onwards.
