Condition

On thick, soft Japan paper, at right margin with slight fold mark, at extreme left margin single creases, at the back side with remains of an old mounting.

Comments

Very fine proof or partial print, inscribed by the artist herself "2nd state". Of great rarity, there are only two copies of this II state. The copy in the Philadelphia Museum is heavily overworked in opaque white. The question arises whether the present sheet is an intermediate state between the II. and III. state. The black part of the little boy's back is overworked in opaque white on the Philadelphia copy, on the present print the vertical strokes are already cut as in the III state.

Zustand

Auf dickem, weichem Japan, rechts im Rand mit leichter Faltspur, im äussersten linken Rand einzelne Knicke, rückseitig mit Resten einer alten Montierung

Erläuterungen

Sehr schöner Probe- oder Teildruck, von der Künstlerin eigenhändig bezeichnet "2. Zust". Von grosser Seltenheit, es gibt von diesem II. Zustand lediglich zwei Exemplare. Das Exemplar im Philadelphia Museum ist stark in Deckweiss überarbeitet. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob es sich beim vorliegenden Blatt um einen Zwischenzustand zwischen dem II. und III. Zustand handelt. Die schwarze Rückenpartie des kleinen Jungen ist auf dem Philadelphia Exemplar mit Deckweiss überarbeitet, auf dem vorliegenden Druck sind die vertikalen Striche bereits wie im III. Zustand geschnitten.
