1914 was a very formative year for Klee. On the one hand, there was the journey to Tunis with his artist friends August Macke and Louis Moilliet, which has gone down in art history, but then there was also the outbreak of the First World War, which took its first toll on Klee's circle as early as September 1914 with Macke's death at the front. At the end of 1914 and beginning of 1915 a series of ink drawings on Ingres or Fabriano was produced. There are themes from the journey to Tunis, from the war and abstractions. "Sun in Thor" takes up a North African architecture through which a stylised sun shines. One glimpses a ship, several towers and domes, a beautiful little print. In 1923, the extremely rare lithograph with the same title and the same picture layout (Kornfeld 90, only three prints are known) was created, the subject consequently continued to occupy Klee
