On laid paper, with watermark "MBM FRANCE INGRES D'ARCHES", on the reverse with the inscription in pencil "Vacha". Fresh in colours and in very fine condition. With a small backed tear at upper left.
In the 1930s, landscapes predominated in Erich Heckel's artistic oeuvre. Apart from a few paintings created during this period, he concentrated on works on paper. In 1934 the artist spent time in the Rhön, a border region between Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. This large-format watercolour could have been painted in Vacha, a Thuringian town in the northern foothills of the Rhön, with the stone Werra bridge in the foreground and St. John's church in the left half of the picture.
