    Comments

The sitter is Hans Flury (1896-1980), the brother of Amiet's adopted daughter Greti Amiet (1900-1979). They were the children from the first marriage of Anna Amiet's sister Mina Luder (1869-1923) and the teacher Fritz Adam (1866-1901). Both siblings, with their original surname Adam, were adopted after their father's early death from tuberculosis: Greti by the Amiets and her brother Hans, after their mother's second marriage, by their husband Theodor Flury (1866-1927), who ran a hosiery factory and a drapery shop in Olten. This also explains the distinguished clothing of the young, seventeen-year-old man
