On light brownish wove paper (papier vélin), with narrow lightstruck in the old mount. One vertical fold trace in the right third of the sheet
The years 1904/1905 were marked by the transition from the "Période bleu" to the "Période rose". It is assumed that Picasso's acquaintance with Fernande Olivier brought about the change from the melancholy motifs and colourfulness of the "blue period" to the more cheerful tones and depictions of the "pink period". Circus performers, harlequins, jugglers and also mothers with children become central in this new creative phase. Numerous preparatory sketches were made in connection with the large-format painting "Les Saltimbanques" of 1905, which is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and the epoch-making series of prints with the same name. A very beautiful pen and ink drawing with jugglers and a trapeze artist
