Sunflowers occupy a prominent position as a motif among Nolde's flower paintings. From 1926 onwards, he painted over 50 works in oil. The flower motifs were provided by the rich garden around his house in Seebüll in northern Germany on the Danish border. Nolde himself had designed the residential and studio house within sight of his father's farm and had included the fantastic view of the landscape from the north windows of the studio
