On strong wove paper (papier vélin), slightly browned. Traces of old mounting at the back. Colour fresh and in very good overall condition

Comments

After his experiences in the First World War, Léger went into exile in the USA from 1940 to 1945. The works created there became more two-dimensional and graphic, the colour palette often reduced to the primary colours and their mixtures. During his time in New York he taught at Yale University in New Haven. His late style, which he developed further after his return to France in 1946, can unmistakably be seen as a breeding ground for the "Pop Art" that emerged shortly after Léger's death. In terms of motifs, he took up the classical "genres", with still lifes occupying a special place. The present gouache is a preparatory work for the painting of the same title (cf. Hansma/Bauquier 1428). Léger gave the sheet as a gift; at the lower right he drew a small railway, probably to allude to a shared experience.

Erläuterungen

Nach seinen Erlebnissen im Ersten Weltkrieg begab sich Léger von 1940 bis 1945 ins Exil in die USA. Die dort entstehenden Arbeiten werden flächiger und graphischer, die Farbpalette reduziert sich oft auf die Primärfarben und deren Mischungen. Während seiner Zeit in New York unterrichtet er an der Yale University in New Haven. Sein Spätstil, den er ab 1946 nach seiner Rückkehr nach Frankreich weiterentwickelt, kann unverkennbar als Nährboden der kurz nach Légers Tod entstehenden “Pop Art” angesehen werden. Er nimmt motivisch die klassischen “Genres” auf, wobei die Stillleben einen besonderen Stellenwert einnehmen. Die vorliegende Gouache ist eine Vorarbeit für das Gemälde gleichen Titels (vgl. Hansma/Bauquier 1428). Léger hat das Blatt verschenkt, unten rechts zeichnete er noch eine kleine Eisenbahn, wohl um an ein gemeinsames Erlebnis anzuspielen
