III, pag. 241) and as mentioned by Hinterding/Rutgers for prints during Rembrandt's lifetime. With decidedly wide paper margin (more than 11 mm on all sides) and slight lightstruck

    Comments

One of the main prints from Rembrandt's graphic œuvre, rich in figures and detailed down to the individual facial expressions. The print was already highly sought after during his lifetime. Von Seidlitz writes: "One of the master's most magnificent compositions, of rare unity and at the same time extremely powerful light effect. The process is simply and convincingly depicted: The mass of very different characteristic listeners is unified by the spirit emanating from Christ". And Karin Althaus further remarks: "Rembrandt concentrates on the central group and the sermon. Quietly, thoughtfully, the people listen to Christ standing on a pedestal, speaking to them with arms raised. Each of them is individually characterised in their clothing, posture and facial expression. Their attention is further emphasised by the inattentive child who is drawing in the dust on the ground, lost in thought." (from: Rembrandt, exhibition catalogue Kunstmuseum Basel, 2005-2006)

The copper plate figures in the inventory of Rembrandt's publisher Clement de Jonghe of 1679 with the title "La tomisch plaatjens" (presumably coming from the family "La Tombe"), which led to the erroneous title "La petite tombe" in the first catalogue of Rembrandt's prints by Gersaint. The plate separated early on from the so-called "Basan group", was apparently purchased by Colnaghi's in London in 1830, has not turned up since and is now considered lost

    Literatur

Nancy Ash/Shelley Fletcher, Watermarks in Rembrandt's Prints, Washington 1998, pag. 229, eines der dort erwähnten Exemplare

    Zustand
