    Comments

"Gothick Attack" was created by British artists Gilbert & George (Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore) in 1980 when they lived and worked in East London. They met at St Martin's School of Art and have been creating all their work together since 1968. A major contributor to the history of conceptual and performance art, Gilbert & George have redefined the relationship between art and life in their five decades of collaboration. Early on, they found in the compilation of individual images into a monumental whole (the artists call these works "The Pictures") the ideal medium to explore the works in the field of tension between photography and painting. In the compositions, they were able to stage the large themes appropriately, almost theatrically. The photographs are black and white prints printed on resin-coated paper and then processed with dyes.

"Gothick Attack" is part of a series of over one hundred works entitled "Modern Fears", which were created in 1980 and 1981. Among them are recurring elements of Gothic sculpture, which in their oversized presence seem threatening, sinister and fascinating at the same time. In the work offered here, the dramatic effect is particularly emphasised by the division into two parts: above, menacingly in green, an indefinable being; below, as in most of her works, the artist herself, as a "Living Sculpture", so to speak, in red - smoke rising from her mouth. A very expressive work
