    Comments

At the end of 1945, Alberto Giacometti returned from Switzerland to his Paris studio after having fled Paris in 1942, like many of his contemporaries. Using models, he again began to devote himself to representational art. During his time in Switzerland, he had experimented obsessively with creating tiny, matchstick-like plaster representations, working plaster blocks down to virtual nothingness

"For Giacometti, then, the figurines are not a scaled-down edition of larger statues, for in that case they would preserve, albeit on a smaller scale, the number and variety of aspects that in the latter denote the object, the person they strive to resemble. The figurines are a woman or a head seen from a distance and preserve the extremely reduced mass of their image perceived at a distance. Thus there are fewer details, but just as much truth in the overall character. [...] From this point of view, the small figure, which shows less detail than the large one because it is seen from a distance, has far greater chances of allowing the unity to appear in its clearly defined outlines and in its view freed from matter, which for Giacometti increasingly becomes the explicit goal of likeness. In short, the small figure possesses more reality. And if it shrinks even further, it may find access to absolute reality." (from: Yves Bonnefoy, pag. 275-76)

The protagonist Henri Rol-Tanguy (1908-2002) was a communist and commander of the French Resistance during the Second World War. His name was officially changed to Rol-Tanguy in 1970 according to his wartime name "Colonel Rol (-Tanguy)". He was one of the main actors in the liberation of Paris in August 1944.

The bronze "Petit buste sur socle (Rol-Tanguy)" was created by Giacometti in 1946 to commemorate Henry Rol-Tanguy and French resistance fighters in general
