    Comments

Franz Gertsch gave up painting for a few years in 1986 in favour of woodcutting. In this printing technique he found the ideal medium to print a motif in different, monochrome colour variations. The models for his woodcuts are his own photographs, which he transfers to the wood plate in a lengthy working process. With a small gouge, he sets a fine grid of "light dots" which, when printed, allow the white paper, sometimes also the underprint of a clay plate in a different colour, to shine through. The result is a grid structure reminiscent of pixels, from which the motif emerges. He finds the models for his portraits in his immediate surroundings, in this case Vera von Siebenthal, born in 1973. The oversized presence of the portrait and the focus on the eye area lend the work a "magical" presence that is difficult to escape.

Before each hand print, the plate is cleaned and re-inked. Each print is printed by hand with the collaboration of Nik Hausmann, always varying in colour and print intensity, so that the prints are in fact unique. Small editions are always produced. Only 34 prints of Vera are printed. As a rule, there are only prints with the drawing plate; prints with two plates (with a drawing plate and a clay plate) were only produced in two. 24 are considered "editions", including the one offered here, which, according to information from the Franz Gertsch archive, bears the number "2/24", plus 10 proofs. The printing block is made of lime wood, the present print is in red. According to the artist's note on the back of the sheet, the following colours are printed: Vermilion and Crimson. The wide paper margin deserves special mention; only two prints have been made in this way. Unfortunately, the plate broke during the printing process, so that the very small edition of 24 remained.

We would like to thank the Gertsch family for the valuable information about this work.
