Condition

On wove paper (papier vélin), with watermark "ARCHES". The sheet slightly wavy and with single handling creases, on the reverse with remains of an old mounting. Fresh in colour and in very nice condition

Comments

Space and colour are the central artistic means in Francis' work. At the end of the 1960s, the so-called "Edge Paintings" were created; works that are defined by a white surface in the middle and in which the colours frame the edges like a ribbon.

The present work is stylistically related to this period and yet is freer in expression: it captivates through its composition and colour intensity, executed with brushstrokes and drippings grouped around an "empty" space in the centre

Auf Velin, mit Wasserzeichen "ARCHES". Das Blatt leicht wellig und mit einzelnen Griffknicken, rückseitig mit Resten einer alten Montierung. Insgesamt farbfrisch und in sehr schöner Erhaltung

Erläuterungen

Raum und Farbe sind die zentralen künstlerischen Gestaltungsmittel in Francis' Schaffen. Ende der 1960er Jahre entstehen die sogenannten "Edge Paintings"; Werke, die in der Mitte von einer weissen Fläche bestimmt sind und in denen die Farben wie ein Band die Ränder umrahmen

Die vorliegende Arbeit schliesst stilistisch an diese Periode an und ist dennoch freier im Ausdruck: Sie besticht durch ihre Komposition und Farbintensität, ausgeführt mit Pinselstrichen und Drippings, die sich um einen "leeren" Raum in der Mitte gruppieren
