In 1950 Sam Francis moved to Paris, where he met Jean-Paul Riopelle, who was to have an important influence on him. The study of Monet's Water Lilies also had a profound influence on Francis's work; from a very muted palette of greys and whites, he returned to the qualities of light and colour. As early as 1952, he had his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Nina Dausset in Paris.

1950 zog Sam Francis nach Paris, wo er Jean-Paul Riopelle kennenlernte, der einen wichtigen Einfluss auf ihn ausüben sollte. Auch das Studium der Seerosen von Monet hatte einen tiefgreifenden Einfluss auf Francis' Werk; von einer sehr gedämpften Palette von Grau- und Weisstönen kehrte er zu den Qualitäten von Licht und Farbe zurück. Bereits 1952 hatte er seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Nina Dausset in Paris
