    Comments

Abstract human figures with characteristic triangular or rectangular heads can be found in Lynn Chadwick's work since the early 1960s. After the "Watchers" or the "Winged figures", seated, reclining and standing couples appear in the œuvre from the 1970s onwards.

These couples now have clear male and female attributes, with the triangular face shape assigned to the female figure and the rectangular shape to the male figure. While the surfaces of the bodies are mostly evenly shaped, the surfaces of the face, i.e. the triangle and the rectangle, are polished or patinated in a different way, so that they seem to look at you almost like mirrors. The figures are depersonalised and in fact become signs or metaphors of man and woman. They are intimate togethernesses, here formed on a plinth in the manner of a mattress, which we viewers experience directly in ever-changing constellations, but with their heads always alertly turned towards us. In the work offered here, the female figure is unclothed and obviously shows female sexual characteristics, while the male figure is wrapped in a kind of cloak. Chadwick's sculptures achieve a universal validity in their symbolism and astonish us again and again with their directness and the incomparable sounding out of space
