Comments

This exceptional composition emanates tenderness. The background is divided into two subtly painted areas of colour. The upper part in golden yellow could refer to a spiritual level, the lower in blue-green, rather to the present, the real life. In the "spiritual-creative" field we see the mystical animal, symbolising inspiration, and a genius. Below, next to the houses of Vitebsk lies a pair of lovers surrounded by musicians. Both worlds are interconnected through the lovers and the tree of life. For Chagall they were always equally important

Erläuterungen

Zärtlichkeit spricht aus der besonderen Komposition. Der Hintergrund ist in zwei subtil gemalte Farbflächen aufgeteilt. Der obere Teil in goldenem Gelb könnte auf eine spirituelle Ebene, der untere, in Blau-Grün gehalten, eher auf die Gegenwart, das eigentliche Leben verweisen. Im "spirituell-kreativen" Feld finden sich das für die Inspiration stehende mystische Tier und ein Genius, unten, neben den Häusern von Witebsk liegt ein Liebespaar umgeben von Musikanten. Beide Welten sind mit dem Liebespaar und dem Lebensbaum miteinander verbunden und waren für Chagall stets gleich wichtig
