Chagall’s preoccupation with biblical-religious themes also resulted in large paintings on the subject. The "Root of Jesse" or "Tree of Jesse" is a common pictorial motif in religious iconography. It represents Jesus’ descent from the house of King David as a tree of life, originating with Jesse, David’s father, King of Judah and Israel. Chagall realised the subject in a large painting from 1960 and a lithograph, amongst others, enriched as always with his own biography

Die Beschäftigung mit biblisch-religiösen Themen mündete auch in grosse Gemälde zum Thema. Die Wurzel Jesse (auch Jessebaum) ist ein verbreitetes Bildmotiv der religiösen Ikonographie. Es stellt die Abstammung Jesu aus dem Hause des Königs David als Lebensbaum dar, ausgehend von Jesse, dem Vater Davids, König von Juda und Israel. Chagall hat das Thema etwa im grossen Gemälde von 1960 oder auch in einer Lithographie umgesetzt, wie immer angereichert mit seiner eigenen Biographie
