    Comments

Chagall’s own as well as collective memories are often present in the artist’s works. Here it is the departure of a family. The motif may represent the holy family or, metaphorically, the exodus of the Jewish people in ancient times, the diaspora over many centuries and finally the emigrations in the Third Reich – all reflected in Chagall’s own biography. The picture thus evokes a fascinating and profound lexical ambiguity. The composition, executed in impressive colours and accents, testifies to the continuous creative power and demonstrates Chagall’s constant search for new, artistic means of expression
