"J'ai toujours considéré les clowns, les acrobates et les acteurs comme des êtres tragiquement humains qui ressembleraient, pour moi, aux personnages de certaines peintures religieuses" [I have always considered clowns, acrobats and actors as tragic human beings who, for me, would look like characters in certain religious paintings], Chagall writes in "Chagall – Le Cirque", 1967
The "Écuyère" or rider, wearing a bright orange skirt, stands in the centre. The circus ring bears numerous elements that keep cropping up in his artistic treatment of the theme. Noteworthy are the circular movement and the oscillation between focus and less precision – a very dynamic composition full of surprises
