Since his artistic beginnings, Chagall was fascinated by the circus – a metaphor for life he would often incorporate in his works until his later years. "Écuyères" (riders) and artists dominate the action, a circus band, surrounded by other artists and the audience, is playing. The composition is incredibly rich designed, a colourful firework bursting with "joie de vivre" and a desire for life
