Eduardo Chillida dedicated 4 large-scale iron sculptures to the Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer Omar Khayyám, which he created from 1982 to 1983 and called "mesas" (tables) (cf. Chillida/Cobo no. 1982008, 1983005, 1983009 and 198310). What these colossal steel sculptures have in common is that they stand on three legs and seem to float above the ground. The artist has "perforated" the "tabletop" of each of these works, creating an empty space. The present collage can be related to these sculptures. It leans formally on the "cut-out" shape of the sculptures and evokes a strong object character despite its two-dimensionality. In addition to this collage, there is also an etching dedicated to Omar Khayyám (cf. Koelen 82006)
