The drawing was made one year after László Moholy-Nagy moved to Chicago in 1937 on the recommendation of Walter Gropius to become director of the newly founded IIT Institute of Design, also known as the "New Bauhaus". It is a gift to the architectural historian Sigfried Giedion, who taught at Harvard University in 1938/39 and still knew the artist from his time at the Bauhaus

Die Zeichnung entstand ein Jahr nachdem László Moholy-Nagy auf Empfehlung von Walter Gropius 1937 nach Chicago gezogen war, um Direktor des neu gegründeten IIT Institute of Design, auch bekannt als das "Neue Bauhaus", zu werden. Sie ist ein Geschenk an den Architekturhistoriker Sigfried Giedion, der 1938/39 an der Harvard University lehrte und den Künstler noch von seiner Zeit am Bauhaus her kannte
