    Comments

In the early 1970s, Zao Wou-Ki "rediscovered" a favourite medium of traditional Chinese painting, namely ink painting and watercolour, through his good friend and fellow painter Henri Michaux. He had mastered these techniques since childhood, but had almost completely neglected them after arriving in France because he did not want to produce "chinoiseries". In the present work, the artist combines "masses" of high density with "zones" of infinite subtle transparency. In this way, he manages to organise the "paper space" into contrasting fields, hardly working on the upper part and leaving it free, as it were, to a cloudless sky as a reserve
