In September 1940, Fernand Léger travelled to the USA, where he would remain until December 1945. First he painted the "Plongeurs", swimmers whose bodies he remembered in the water. Later, in the village of Rouses Point NY, he created the series of "Cyclistes". Painted mostly frontally, he was fascinated by the reflection of the metal bicycle frames and the perfect circles of the wheels. The figures mostly wear American shorts and jumpers. Articles of clothing that had not yet become widespread in Europe. Léger thought the figures looked like circus artists when they were dressed. The "Cyclistes" series is characterised by the fact that all the groups of figures stand still as if in a photographer's pose. Léger later took up parts of the composition again for his large-format work "Les Loisirs - Hommage à Louis David"

Erläuterungen

Im September 1940 reiste Fernand Léger in die USA, wo er bis Dezember 1945 bleiben sollte. Zunächst malte er die "Plongeurs", Schwimmer, an deren Körper im Wasser er sich erinnerte. Später schuf er in der Ortschaft Rouses Point NY die Serie der "Cyclistes". Meist frontal gemalt, faszinierten ihn die Spiegelung der Velorahmen aus Metall und die perfekten Kreise der Räder. Die Figuren tragen meist amerikanische Shorts und Sweater. Kleidungsstücke, die in Europa noch keine Verbreitung gefunden hatten. Léger meinte, die Figuren sähen eingekleidet aus wie Zirkusartisten. Die Serie der "Cyclistes" zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass alle Figurengruppen still stehen wie in einer Fotografenpose. Später nahm Léger Teile der Komposition für sein grossformatiges Werk "Les Loisirs - Hommage à Louis David" wieder auf
