On brown wrapping paper, with light margins (mat burn). With neatly backed tears at upper and lower margin. Little foxing
The woodcut was made in the summer of 1919, during Kirchner's third stay on the Stafelalp, again in the Rüesch Hut. The composition captures the meeting of the alpine inhabitants on a Sunday afternoon, with a total of 18 people, down the valley with the alpine backdrop, including the Altein on the right and the Tinzenhorn in the centre
The sheet is extremely rare; in Gercken's catalogue raisonné only one of the first state and only three of the second state can be found, among them this one
Eberhard Grisebach writes in a letter from Davos to his wife Lotte in Jena, dated 27 March 1922: "Kirchner gave me a wonderful large woodcut in which all the farmers of Stafelalp are cavorting in front of the mountains."
