Wassily Kandinsky had a hard time gaining a foothold in Neuilly-sur-Seine, as abstract art was not much appreciated in Paris, which was dominated by Cubism and Surrealism. Only Jeanne Bucher in her Montparnasse gallery and Christian and Yvonne Zervos with their gallery in the office of the art magazine "Cahiers d'Art" stood up for him. However, this did not change his creative urge. His late gouaches are captivating because of their clear formal language, which can in fact be regarded as the quintessence of his writings on art
"Pointillé" belongs to a group of gouaches on black paper that Kandinsky created in the last decade. The softer, more organic forms and shapes were certainly influenced by Kandinsky's emerging interest in molecular biology in the 1930s. One can even sense an influence of Surrealism in the freer realisation in certain works. A powerful and very painterly painting
