Perfect impression and condition, on wove paper (papier vélin), with watermark "J Whatman" (visible "JW"), with wide margins, small corner added at lower right. Stone size still well visible on three sides
The print was probably created in Bordeaux in the autumn of 1825, probably the first lithograph that Goya created at Gaulon. Goya moved from Madrid to Bordeaux in 1824, triggered by the Restoration in Spain after the war with France
After the development of the lithographic technique by Alois Senefelder (1771-1834) in Munich in 1796, a studio was opened in Paris in 1816 and one in Madrid in 1819. The Madrid studio was established under the leadership of José María Cardano (1781-ca. 1835), where Goya, who was already 73 years old at the time, created his first small-format lithographs. The lithographic studio of Cyprien Charles Marie Gaulon (1777-1856) in Bordeaux is also secured from 1819. In this studio Goya created masterpieces in the new technique, some small-format works and then the 5 depictions of bullfights
The lithograph "Bull attacked by Dogs" is of great rarity. Only 6 copies are known to Harris, all in museum possession. In addition, there is a further copy in German private ownership and the present one:
1. Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett, formerly Boix.
2. Chicago, The Art Institute
3. Madrid, Biblioteca Nacional, formerly Carderera
4. Madrid, Fundaciõn Lázaro Galdiano
5. New York, Hispanic Society
6. Washington, National Gallery of Art, formerly Rosenwald (which was purchased by Gutekunst und Klipstein, Bern, in the auction of 7 November 1946, lot 37, from the Richard Robinow collection of Richard Zinser)
7. private collection Germany, formerly Gerstenberg
8. the present specimen, formerly "British Rail Pension Funds", presumably formerly Philip Hofer, Cambridge MA

1. Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett, ehemals Boix
2. Chicago, The Art Institute
3. Madrid, Biblioteca Nacional, ehemals Carderera
4. Madrid, Fundaciõn Lázaro Galdiano
5. New York, Hispanic Society
6. Washington, National Gallery of Art, ehemals Rosenwald (Das von Gutekunst und Klipstein, Bern, in der Auktion vom 7. November 1946, Los 37, aus der Sammlung Richard Robinow von Richard Zinser angekauft wurde)
7. Privatsammlung Deutschland, ehemals Gerstenberg
8. Das vorliegende Exemplar, ehemals "Britisch Rail Pension Funds", vermutlich vormals Philip Hofer, Cambridge MA
