    Comments

David, born in Bethlehem as the son of Jesse, went down in biblical history as a great singer and psalmist. Again and again, Chagall paints him on the harp. King David is a symbol of creativity in the Jewish and Old Testament Christian religions. Painted in pure grisaille, the old king shows himself to his people. The stylised menorah (candlestick) hovering over the whole seems to point to the future, the cockerel, symbol of the family, can be read as a sign of David's descendants, such as Solomon, who built the temple, up to Jesus
