    Comments

Religious themes have occupied an important place in Marc Chagall's oeuvre since his early work. In a very contrasting composition, Moses, accompanied by angels, descends from Mount Sinai and presents the Tablets of the Law to the people dancing around the Golden Calf in an almost apocalyptic manner. The two stone tablets, written "with the finger of the Lord" according to Exodus, chapter 31, verse 18, he points over to the golden calf and lets it literally "burn up". The motif, often used by the artist, is particularly dramatically realised in the present composition, using a rich palette of different techniques. Moses, crowned by the halo, becomes a figure of light, a kind of saviour
