The theme of mother and child runs like a leitmotif through Chagall's work. It symbolises life and love, just like the rooster and the bright bouquets of flowers. The painting, done in Indian ink on canvas, was created in the USA when Chagall lived with Virginia McNeil and their son David, born in 1946. The painting is thus also to be read as a very personal testimony to the artist's private life, unmistakably showing Virginia giving her son David the bottle. Both are hovering over the mystical animal that promises inspiration and the rooster that stands for family and love. The stylised Witebsk can be seen at the lower edge of the picture
A beautiful and very personal painting in ink from the time of the artist's American exile

Einzelne Einrisse oben links
