    Comments

In parallel to his studies of architecture in Madrid, which he began in 1952, Miguel Berrocal attended various courses at art schools, including lessons with the Spanish sculptor Angel Ferrant, who encouraged him to pursue his artistic ambitions. As early as 1955, he took part in various group exhibitions, and that year also marked the beginning of his sculptural activity. His first objects were static iron sculptures, but in 1959 he created his first dismountable object in iron, "Grande torse", which he had cast in bronze in 6 copies. From then on, movable sculptures that could be dismantled into their individual elements became Berrocal's trademark

The present work is a 4-part steel sculpture that can be rotated on its own axis, the upper section can be pushed forward and backward, one element can be folded upward, another can be removed. While many sculptures from this productive creative phase exist in a small edition in addition to the original, "Odalisca I" is a unique piece. Early, significant object
