Flower motifs appear frequently in Chagall’s œuvre. He uses them as iconographic symbols of creativity and connectedness, mostly to indicate a self-portrait. Here is a summer bouquet in a large green vase, floating over the rooftops of Vitebsk. On the left a creature with two faces, possibly intended to represent the artist himself, is reading a book opened to a page with the letters "CHAG" on it. To the right of the bouquet sits a woman who stares intently at the reading figure. The picture tells of love, the artist’s love of life. It is an important source of inspiration for him; he also sings its praises in numerous texts. Upon close observation, one also discovers hidden figures, grouped around the lovers in intriguing and innovative guises. innovation. This is a dynamic sheet full of mysterious llusions
