The artist’s own memories, as well as the collective memory of his people are a frequent feature of Chagall’s works. In this instance it is the departure of a family or an entire group of people. The image is a metaphor for the flight of the Jewish people in antiquity, the diaspora over many centuries, and finally emigration during the Nazi era, all mirrored in Chagall’s own biography. The picture thus encourages a profound reading on several levels. The composition, with its impressive colouration and accents, also demonstrates the artist’s intense awareness of both historical and contemporary events
