Shirley Jaffe, who died in 2016, moved from New York to Paris in 1949 and joined the circle of Americans like Sam Francis, Kimber Smith, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Joan Mitchell, Elsworth Kelly and others. Her early work is one of the significant achievements within the framework of abstract expressionism, largely influenced by the American artists who came to Paris around 1950.
