Bern 1853 - 1918 Genf
Circa 1903
Pencil on paper, squared
126,7x60,8 cm
Lower right with the estate stamp "Ferd. Hodler".
Cf. Bätschmann/Müller 1341, there reprod.
Estate of Ferdinand Hodler; Succession Berthe Hodler, Vente Berthe Hodler, Geneva, 14.4.1958, stamp on reverse; Private collection Switzerland
On grey wove paper (papier vélin), mounted on canvas, with traces of studio work, otherwise in perfect condition.
The beautifully executed gouache "Female Nude Standing in a Forest Meadow", now in the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, is related to the beautifully executed squared drawing offered here. The squaring suggests that Hodler planned a realisation in oil - however, as far as we know today, a painting has not survived. The drawing is an impressive testimony to Hodler's masterly handling of the medium; rarely have such large-format drawings survived in this quality.
