    Comments

Ferdinand Hodler gave the painting to Agnes Jakobi (1867-1943). A handwritten New Year's card for 1887, dated with a letter of 30.12.1886, to "Fräulein Jakoby" is enclosed. Hodler pasted a portrait photograph on it, which suggests that he courted her. Loosli noted in his supplementary inventory that Hodler painted Agnes Jakobi in 1885. The painting can easily be placed in a series of similarly elaborated paintings. Jakobi did not respond to Hodler's courtship and married the Thun grammar school teacher Karl Huber in 1898. The painting is an important document in Hodler's biography.
