Impeccable condition
Zao Wou-Ki painted as a ten-year-old boy and studied painting at the Hangzhou School of Art in China at the age of 15. In the early 1940s, he was influenced by works by Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso, which he received as postcards from his uncle. The urge to further his education and to learn the Western art of painting led him to France in 1947, where two years later he produced this small-format work, which is significant for his early work. Zao Wou-Ki is considered one of the main representatives of "lyrical" abstraction and understood how to unite Eastern and Western approaches in art
At first, one sees only an abstract composition of brown and white strokes on a green ground; a second glance reveals a white bird in a brown cage
