The canvas doubled, some minimal retouching in the outermost margins, covered by the frame, a small scratch in the upper centre. In very good overall condition
The small town of Saint-Mammès lies to the south-east of Fontainebleau, at the confluence of the Seine and the Loing. Sisley, who lived nearby in Veneux-Nadon at the time, painted over 100 views of the landscape and life in this village. The depictions of a sawmill in front of which the tree trunks are piled up are particularly exciting. Captured with light brushstrokes, it bears witness to the Impressionist demand for the immediate, the accidental and the moment. The treatment of light and the atmospheric composition of the picture are also impressive. This painting of the sawmill is one of the first representations of the subject and reveals the appeal of rural yet industrial France, to which the Impressionists were often attracted. An important document of rural, picturesque life

In sehr guter Gesamterhaltung
