    Comments

Léger served at the front during the First World War. After several injuries, including a mustard gas attack, he was treated in various military hospitals for convalescence. It was during this time that he began his "période mécanique", whose inspiration can be found in war machinery, wartime experiences and mechanics in general. With the recurring and alternating use of the geometric elements cone, cylinder and disc, the artist created fascinating spatial situations

"Le Remorqueur" simplistically depicts a tugboat, which preoccupied him as a symbol of urban and maritime life in Paris. Based on several preparatory works on paper, including the version here, he created two oil paintings in the following year. The chimneys of the ship rise up between urban architectures. A very high quality and detailed version of the subject in very good, freshly coloured condition
